Senecio Herreianus — Oval String of Beads — Ø12 cm — H20 cm

🌿 Leaves shaped like graphic oval beads • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Low watering • 🌬️ Easy succulent • 🌟 Rare trailing plant

The Senecio Herreianus, also known as the Oval String of Beads or String of Beads, is a rare and elegant trailing succulent plant, recognized for its fleshy leaves shaped like oval beads that create a uniquely cascading botanical effect. This fascinating plant features thin stems adorned with small translucent light green oval leaves that resemble a necklace of precious beads.

Native to South Africa, Senecio Herreianus is a succulent from the Asteraceae family, related to the famous Senecio Rowleyanus (String of Pearls). Unlike the latter, whose leaves are perfectly round, the Herreianus has slightly oval leaves with a small tip, giving it an even more graphic and delicate appearance. Its trailing stems can reach several tens of centimeters and create an airy, minimalist botanical curtain effect. With its current height of 20 cm and pot diameter of 12 cm, it becomes a rare and precious trailing succulent in your urban jungle, perfect for collectors and enthusiasts of unusual plants seeking a succulent with graphic foliage, easy care, and low watering needs.

Exposure & Location

The Senecio Herreianus enjoys bright indirect light to maintain its compact growth and dense foliage. Like all succulents, it tolerates a few hours of gentle morning or late afternoon sun.

  • Exposure: bright indirect light with a few hours of gentle sun, avoid harsh midday sun.
  • Ideal: hanging near a bright window, high shelf, east or west-facing windowsill.
  • Temperature: 15 to 25 °C, tolerates cooler temperatures in winter (minimum 10 °C).
  • Substrate: very well-draining, special cactus and succulent mix (potting soil + sand + perlite).

Verdeia tip: the more bright light it receives, the more compact its growth and the denser and more translucent its foliage will be.

Watering & Care

  • Watering: low; allow the substrate to dry completely between waterings.
  • Frequency: about once every 2 weeks in spring-summer, once a month in winter.
  • Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and very well-draining substrate.
  • Humidity: tolerates dry air, no need for misting.
  • Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer with a cactus fertilizer diluted by half.
  • Winter rest: greatly reduce watering in autumn-winter (maximum once a month).
  • Pruning: trim overly long stems in spring to encourage branching.

Beware of overwatering: it is better to skip a watering than to water too often. Soft stems are a sign of excess water.

Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations

With its graphic oval bead-shaped leaves and rarity, the Senecio Herreianus instantly becomes a fascinating collector’s piece. It deserves a bright hanging spot where its trailing stems can be admired.

  • To pair with: other Senecio (Rowleyanus, String of Dolphins), Ceropegia, Rhipsalis, Dischidia, or other trailing succulents to create a graphic and airy collection.
  • Ideal pot: macramé hanger, matte ceramic decorative pot (white, gray, terracotta), or small hanging pot to showcase the trailing stems.
  • Ambiance: perfect hanging near a bright window, on a high shelf, or as a highlight in a collection of rare and graphic plants.

Place it hanging to fully enjoy the cascading effect of its translucent oval beads.

Verdeia Tips

  • Very easy to care for — perfect for beginners and those who forget to water.
  • Avoid harsh direct midday sun that can burn delicate leaves.
  • Water sparingly — it is a succulent that stores water in its leaves.
  • Use a very well-draining substrate to prevent root rot.
  • Repot every 2-3 years in spring into a slightly larger pot.
  • Very easy to propagate — cut a stem and place it in dry substrate for a few days before lightly watering.
  • May produce small fragrant white flowers in summer under good conditions.
  • Slightly toxic if ingested — keep out of reach of children and pets.
