Cycas Revoluta — Japanese Sago Palm — Ø17 cm — H60 cm
🌴 Spectacular prehistoric plant • ☀️ Bright light to direct sunlight • 💧 Moderate watering • 🦕 Living fossil • 🌟 Iconic collector's plant
The Cycas Revoluta, also known as the Japanese Sago Palm, is a spectacular and fascinating prehistoric plant, recognized for its stiff pinnate fronds that evoke tree ferns from the dinosaur era. This iconic species features glossy dark green fronds arranged in a symmetrical crown around a thick, scaly trunk that creates a unique architectural silhouette.
Native to Japan and southern China, the Cycas Revoluta is a true living fossil whose ancestors roamed the Earth over 200 million years ago, long before flowering plants appeared. Unlike palms it resembles, the Cycas is a primitive cycad that produces cones rather than flowers. Its extremely slow growth (one new crown of fronds per year) and exceptional longevity (several centuries) make it a valuable collector's plant. With its current height of 60 cm and pot diameter of 17 cm, it becomes a prehistoric centerpiece in your urban jungle, perfect for collectors and rare plant enthusiasts seeking a statement plant full of history and character.
Exposure & Location
The Cycas Revoluta enjoys bright light with a few hours of direct sunlight to keep its fronds compact and vigorous. It tolerates partial shade but growth will be even slower.
- Exposure: bright light to direct sunlight (a few hours per day), tolerates partial shade.
- Ideal: bright living room, veranda, balcony, or terrace in warm seasons (frost-free).
- Temperature: 15 to 27 °C, tolerates cool temperatures down to 5 °C.
- Substrate: very well-drained, rich (green plant potting soil + sand + perlite).
Verdeia tip: the more light it receives, the more compact and vigorous its new fronds will be.
Watering & Care
- Watering: moderate; allow the top 3-5 cm of substrate to dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer, greatly reduce in winter.
- Drainage: absolutely essential — use a pot with drainage holes and very well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: tolerates dry air, no need for misting.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer.
- Winter rest: drastically reduce watering in autumn-winter.
Avoid overwatering at all costs — the trunk can rot quickly. Better to underwater.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
With its spectacular prehistoric fronds and status as a living fossil, the Cycas Revoluta instantly becomes a fascinating conversation piece. It deserves a prime spot where its architectural silhouette can be admired from all angles.
- Pair with: palms (Livistona, Chamaedorea), tree ferns, Zamioculcas or Monstera to create a lush prehistoric atmosphere.
- Ideal pot: matte ceramic decorative pot (gray, terracotta, black) or modern pot to highlight the scaly trunk and stiff fronds.
- Ambiance: perfect as a centerpiece in a spacious living room, entrance hall, veranda, or sheltered terrace.
Place it solo so it can be the star — it is a living plant sculpture charged with 200 million years of history.
Verdeia Tips
- Maintain consistent bright light — in deep shade, new fronds elongate and weaken.
- Avoid overwatering at all costs — it is the main cause of trunk rot.
- Never cut green fronds — only remove fronds that are completely dry and brown at the base.
- Be patient — growth is extremely slow (1 crown of fronds per year).
- Repot every 3-5 years in spring into a slightly larger pot with very well-draining substrate.
- Warning: all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested — keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Handle with care — the edges of the fronds can be sharp.
